Human Rights Model of Disability

Also known as: Rights-Based Model of Disability

A framework for understanding disability that builds on and extends the social model by emphasising the inherent dignity and rights of people with disabilities. Grounded in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), this model goes beyond identifying social barriers to actively recognising disability as a dimension of human diversity and advocating for full inclusion, participation, and equality. It differs from the social model by offering more space for recognising the intersectional experiences of people with disabilities whose lives are also shaped by race, gender, immigration status, and other overlapping categories of power.
