Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Also known as: PTSD
A mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event such as violence, natural disaster, serious accident, or combat. Symptoms include intrusive memories or flashbacks, avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, negative changes in thinking and mood, and heightened reactivity. PTSD is particularly prevalent among refugee and displaced populations due to exposure to conflict, persecution, and dangerous migration journeys. In accessibility contexts, PTSD is relevant to content design — triggering content, sudden audio or visual stimuli, and lack of user control can significantly impact people living with trauma-related conditions.
