Obstacle Detection

Also known as: Obstacle Avoidance

Technology or techniques that identify physical barriers in a person's path and alert them in time to take corrective action. For people who are blind or visually impaired, obstacle detection systems use sensors (ultrasonic, infrared, LiDAR, or camera-based) embedded in devices such as smart canes, wearable bands, or smartphone applications to detect objects and convey their presence through haptic vibrations or audio cues. Effective obstacle detection for active movement like running requires faster response times and greater detection range than walking-pace systems.
