Muscular Dystrophy
Also known as: MD
A group of inherited genetic conditions that cause progressive weakness and degeneration of skeletal muscles, the muscles that control movement. There are many types of muscular dystrophy varying in severity, age of onset, and which muscles are affected. Because muscular dystrophy typically affects large muscle groups first while sparing smaller muscles longer, people with the condition may lose the ability to move their arms while retaining fine finger control — an important consideration for assistive technology design, as devices requiring finger input (such as smart rings) may remain usable when arm-based controls cannot.
