Congenital Blindness

Also known as: Congenital Vision Loss

Blindness or severe visual impairment present from birth or very early childhood, as opposed to acquired or adventitious blindness that develops later in life. The distinction is significant for accessibility because congenitally blind individuals may have different information needs and preferences than those who once had sight. For example, research on automated image descriptions found that congenitally blind users expressed less interest in color descriptions, while people with acquired blindness specifically valued color and style information because of their visual memories. Understanding these differences is important for designing personalized accessible experiences.
