Transportation Accessibility

Also known as: Accessible Transportation, Mobility Accessibility

The design and provision of transportation systems, services, and infrastructure that are usable by people with disabilities. Transportation accessibility encompasses physical access to vehicles and transit stops, accessible information systems (route planning, real-time updates, wayfinding), and the usability of booking and payment interfaces. For people with visual impairments who cannot drive, accessible transportation options — including ridesharing services, public transit, and paratransit — are essential for independent mobility. Research has shown that as many as 20% of people with disabilities in the US face transportation barriers, with 45% lacking access to a personal vehicle, making accessible transportation a critical factor in social participation, employment, and quality of life.
