Hybrid Space

Also known as: Blended Space, Hybrid Community Space

A community or program environment that combines both in-person and online elements, not necessarily simultaneously, to create a more accessible and inclusive experience. In accessibility contexts, hybrid spaces address barriers such as geographic distance, mobility limitations, and lack of technology access by offering complementary virtual and physical participation options. The concept recognizes that in-person and online settings have different strengths — in-person interactions provide sensory engagement and social bonding, while virtual components offer personalization, flexibility, and broader reach. Designing effective hybrid spaces requires intentional coordination rather than simply mirroring an in-person experience online.
