Speech and Language Therapy

Also known as: SLT, Speech-Language Pathology, SLP, Speech Therapy

A healthcare discipline focused on assessing and treating communication difficulties including speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders. Speech and language therapists work with people who stammer, those with dysarthria, aphasia, and other conditions affecting communication. In digital accessibility contexts, SLT is increasingly intersecting with technology as voice-controlled devices and speech recognition systems present both barriers and therapeutic opportunities — smart speakers, for example, have been identified as potential tools for practising speech techniques in a controlled, non-judgmental environment that complements clinical sessions.
