Disability Aesthetics

A discourse related to reclaiming the visibility of disability in mainstream art, particularly visual and performance arts, through the depiction of disabled bodies as both beautiful and inspiring. Unlike disability art, disability aesthetics does not necessarily carry a social meaning of inclusion but leverages the uniqueness of disabled bodies as a means to re-imagine artistic expressions in bold and innovative ways. Disability aesthetics challenges the dominant aesthetic norms that have historically excluded or marginalized disabled bodies, arguing that disability can be a source of artistic beauty, complexity, and creative possibility rather than something to be hidden, cured, or overcome.
