Picture-in-Picture
Also known as: PiP, PIP
A display technique that shows a smaller video or content window overlaid on the main content, allowing viewers to see two sources simultaneously. In accessibility contexts, picture-in-picture is the primary method for presenting sign language interpretation in video and immersive media, showing the interpreter in an inset window over the main content. Key design considerations include the size, position, and background contrast of the interpreter window, ensuring the signing space is adequate, and minimizing obstruction of important visual content. In virtual reality, picture-in-picture sign language can be rendered either fixed to the environment or attached to the user's view.
