Dementia-Friendly

Also known as: Dementia Friendly Community, Dementia Inclusive

An approach to designing environments, services, programs, and communities that are accessible, supportive, and inclusive of people living with dementia. A dementia-friendly community enables people with dementia to participate in social life, access services, and maintain independence for as long as possible. This involves training staff and volunteers to understand dementia, adapting physical spaces to reduce confusion and anxiety, designing programs that focus on present-moment engagement rather than memory recall, and creating safe social atmospheres where cognitive difficulties are normalised rather than stigmatised. The concept extends to technology design, where dementia-friendly interfaces prioritise simplicity, consistency, and multimodal interaction.
