Certified Deaf Interpreter

Also known as: CDI

A Deaf or Hard-of-hearing individual who has obtained professional certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) to provide interpreting, translation, and transliteration services. CDIs work in tandem with hearing interpreters or independently, bringing native or near-native fluency in ASL and deep understanding of Deaf culture, visual communication strategies, and the linguistic nuances that hearing interpreters may miss. CDIs are particularly valuable for translating written English into ASL, working with Deaf individuals who use non-standard sign language varieties, and in legal, medical, and educational settings where accurate communication is critical. Their expertise reflects the linguistic complexity of sign languages as fully independent languages, not merely visual representations of English.
