Voice Output Communication Aid

Also known as: VOCA, Speech Output Device

An electronic augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device that produces synthesized or digitized speech output when a user selects symbols, words, or phrases. VOCAs range from simple single-message devices to sophisticated systems with extensive vocabularies and predictive text. They serve as a primary communication tool for individuals with complex communication needs, enabling spoken interaction with communication partners who may not understand alternative communication methods such as sign language or symbol boards.
