Real Word Error

Also known as: Real-Word Spelling Error

A spelling error that results in a correctly spelled but unintended word, such as typing "hear" instead of "here" or "their" instead of "there." Real word errors are particularly common among people with dyslexia and pose a significant challenge because standard spellcheckers cannot detect them — the word is spelled correctly, just used incorrectly. These errors can change the meaning of a sentence and cause confusion for readers. Specialized spellcheckers and context-aware AI tools are being developed to identify real word errors by analyzing surrounding text for semantic and grammatical coherence.
