ABC Notation
Also known as: ABC Text, ABC Music Notation
A shorthand ASCII text format for representing music notation using plain characters that can be read directly by screen readers. In ABC notation, pitch is represented by letters (A-G for different octaves), rhythm by numbers and fractions, and musical elements like key signatures, time signatures, and decorations by specific character sequences. ABC notation has been widely used for folk music transcription and is an important accessibility tool because it separates musical content from visual presentation, allowing blind musicians to compose and share music without graphical interfaces. However, some aspects of ABC syntax rely on visual spatial relationships between characters, creating unintuitive mappings for non-visual users.
