Multimodal Output

Also known as: Multi-Modal Output, Cross-Modal Output

The simultaneous presentation of information through multiple sensory channels or formats, such as audio, visual, tactile, and text-to-speech, allowing users to choose the modality or combination of modalities that best suits their abilities and preferences. In accessible technology design, multimodal output is critical because users with different disabilities, varying levels of ability, and diverse assistive technology setups benefit from different output modes. For example, a music notation tool might simultaneously provide audio playback, visual print scores, braille output, and text-to-speech descriptions, enabling blind, low-vision, and sighted users to access the same content through their preferred modality.
