Social Capital

The networks of relationships, shared norms, trust, and reciprocity that enable individuals and communities to function effectively and access resources. People with intellectual disabilities often have limited social capital due to restricted social networks, reduced community participation, and reliance on paid support workers rather than reciprocal friendships. Building social capital for people with disabilities involves creating opportunities for genuine social connection, self-expression, and community membership — goals that technology can support by providing alternative communication modes and shared interactive experiences that foster relationships.
