Macular Dystrophy
Also known as: Macular Degeneration
A group of inherited eye conditions that cause progressive damage to the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. Macular dystrophies, including Stargardt disease, result in reduced central vision while peripheral vision is typically preserved. People with macular dystrophy may have difficulty reading standard text, recognizing faces, and performing tasks requiring fine visual detail. In educational and digital contexts, accommodations include screen magnification, high contrast settings, large print materials, and screen readers as the condition progresses.
