Tunnel Vision

Also known as: Peripheral Vision Loss, PVL

A visual impairment characterized by the loss of peripheral vision while central vision may remain intact, resulting in a narrow field of view as if looking through a tunnel. Tunnel vision can be caused by conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, or stroke. It significantly impacts mobility, navigation, and the ability to perceive surroundings, making activities like reading large displays, navigating unfamiliar spaces, and interacting with visual content more challenging. Assistive technologies including AR-based guidance systems have been shown to help reduce obstacle collisions for people with tunnel vision by approximately 50%.
