Chatbot
Also known as: Virtual Assistant, Conversational Agent, Dialog System
A software application that uses text or speech to conduct conversations with users, simulating human-like dialogue to provide information, perform tasks, or guide users through processes. In accessibility, chatbots and conversational user interfaces present both opportunities and challenges: they can offer alternative interaction modes for people who find traditional forms or navigation difficult, support voice input for users with motor impairments, and reduce cognitive load by breaking complex tasks into conversational steps. However, accessibility barriers include overly technical language that excludes users with cognitive disabilities, speech recognition errors, lack of screen reader compatibility, and inconsistent behaviour across text and voice modalities.
