Mobility and Orientation Trainer

Also known as: MOT, Orientation and Mobility Specialist, O&M Specialist, O&M Instructor, Habilitation Specialist

A qualified professional who teaches orientation and mobility (O&M) skills to blind and partially sighted people, enabling safe and independent travel. MOTs assess individual needs and deliver personalized training that progresses from indoor navigation to outdoor route learning, public transport use, and community mobility. Their methods are multisensory, incorporating tactile markers, auditory and olfactory landmarks, tactile maps, and long cane techniques. MOTs also work with families to build confidence and address overprotective behaviors that can limit independence. The demand for MOTs significantly exceeds supply in many countries, creating gaps in service that technology could help bridge through blended training models.
