Incidental Learning

Also known as: Observational Learning, Informal Learning

Knowledge and skills acquired without deliberate instruction, typically through casual observation of the environment and other people. An estimated 80% of early childhood learning occurs incidentally through vision — watching how others make sandwiches, navigate social situations, or coordinate physical movements. Children with blindness miss much of this incidental learning, requiring explicit instruction and structured activities to develop concepts and skills that sighted children absorb naturally. This gap has significant implications for social development, daily living skills, and educational technology design.
