Low and Middle Income Countries
Also known as: LMICs, Developing Countries, Global South
A World Bank classification for countries with gross national income per capita below a defined threshold, encompassing low income and lower-middle income economies. In accessibility contexts, LMICs present distinct challenges including limited investment in accessible infrastructure (such as pedestrian crossings, maintained sidewalks, and accessible public transportation), lower availability and affordability of assistive technologies, fewer formal orientation and mobility training programs, inconsistent internet connectivity, and navigation apps that may lack local language support or accurate mapping data. Approximately 80% of people with disabilities live in LMICs, making these contexts critically important for accessible technology design.
