Self-Determination Theory
Also known as: SDT
A psychological framework identifying three innate human needs — autonomy (feeling in control of one's actions), competence (feeling effective and capable), and relatedness (feeling connected to others) — that drive intrinsic motivation and well-being. In accessibility and rehabilitation contexts, self-determination theory helps explain why accessible technologies and activities can significantly improve users' psychological outcomes: when people with disabilities can actively participate, achieve goals, and connect with peers through technology, their intrinsic motivation and mental health improve. The theory is increasingly used to evaluate and design assistive technologies, rehabilitation games, and inclusive systems.
