Virtual Exploration
Also known as: Virtual Navigation, Virtual Travel
The use of technology to simulate the experience of navigating or exploring a real-world environment without physically being there. For people with visual impairments, virtual exploration typically relies on audio-based representations of geographic data — including spatial audio for points of interest, voice-based route selection, and auditory environmental cues — rather than visual 3D renderings. Virtual exploration tools can serve dual purposes: motivating physical activity by making indoor walking more engaging, and building spatial knowledge and mental maps of locations that users plan to visit, thereby increasing confidence and independence for future real-world navigation.
