OpenStreetMap

Also known as: OSM

A free, collaborative, open-source mapping project that provides geographic data including roads, buildings, and points of interest, contributed and maintained by volunteers worldwide. OpenStreetMap is significant for accessibility because its open data can be freely used to build navigation and exploration tools for people with disabilities without the cost barriers of commercial mapping APIs. However, OSM data quality varies by region — some areas have sparse point-of-interest data, unnamed roads, or outdated information — which can affect the usefulness of assistive applications that rely on it. Community efforts like Wheelmap have extended OSM to include wheelchair accessibility information for locations.
