Pulse Oximetry

Also known as: Pulse Oximeter, SpO2 Monitoring

A non-invasive method of monitoring blood oxygen saturation (O2sat) and heart rate using a sensor typically placed on the finger or wrist. Pulse oximeters use light absorption through the skin to estimate the percentage of hemoglobin in the blood that is carrying oxygen. In pulmonary rehabilitation and exercise settings, pulse oximetry is used to ensure patients with respiratory conditions stay within safe ranges during physical activity. For people with COPD, awareness of O2sat during exercise can provide reassurance that breathlessness does not necessarily indicate dangerous oxygen levels, helping to reduce dyspnea-related anxiety and encourage continued physical activity.
