Guide Dog

Also known as: Seeing Eye Dog, Service Dog, Dog Guide

A specially trained assistance animal that helps blind or visually impaired individuals navigate their environment safely. Guide dogs are trained to avoid obstacles, stop at curbs and steps, and navigate around barriers, enabling their handlers to travel more independently. As a mobility aid, guide dogs complement other assistive technologies and are recognized under disability rights legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, which grants handlers the right to bring guide dogs into public spaces. In research and technology design, accounting for guide dog users is important because their navigation patterns and hands-free needs differ from those of white cane users.
