Music Therapy

A clinical and evidence-based practice that uses music interventions to accomplish individualized therapeutic goals, including improving communication, social interaction, emotional expression, and motor skills. For people with disabilities, music therapy can be particularly effective because music provides a non-verbal medium for interaction and expression, bypassing communication barriers that may exist with spoken language. In autism contexts, music therapy has shown promise in developing social engagement and motor coordination, as people with autism often have similar or superior music processing abilities compared to neurotypical peers. Technology-enhanced music therapy, using tools like motion sensors and digital instruments, can further reduce barriers by removing the need for fine motor control or musical training to participate in music-making.
