Social Emotional Learning
Also known as: SEL, Social-Emotional Learning
A pedagogical approach focused on developing students' self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making abilities to support academic success and mental wellbeing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, social emotional learning resources became one of the most commonly shared categories of educational content on social media, as educators, therapists, and parents sought ways to support children's emotional regulation during the abrupt transition to remote learning. SEL resources for students with disabilities included guides for creating visual routines, scaffolding healthy routines, creating quiet sensory spaces at home, supporting speech therapy remotely, and facilitating learning through play. The intersection of SEL and accessibility highlights the need for Universal Design for Learning approaches that integrate emotional and social support into inclusive online and offline learning environments.
