Meme Accessibility
Also known as: Social Media Image Accessibility
The practice of making internet memes — images, GIFs, and short videos that spread virally through social media — accessible to people with disabilities, particularly those with vision impairments. Memes typically combine visual elements with text overlays, cultural references, and emotional content that are inaccessible to screen reader users without alternative descriptions. Meme accessibility is complicated by the fact that memes often carry meaning through context, irony, and shared cultural knowledge that is difficult to convey in a literal description. Approaches to improving meme accessibility include providing alternative text that describes both the visual content and the intended meaning, creating audio descriptions for animated content, building reusable description libraries for frequently shared memes, and developing automated captioning systems. The widespread use of memes in workplace communication platforms like Slack and Microsoft Teams has expanded meme accessibility from a social media concern to a workplace inclusion issue.
