Survey Knowledge

Also known as: Configurational Knowledge, Map-like Knowledge

Survey knowledge is a type of spatial understanding that provides an overview or mental map of an environment, including the relationships between landmarks, streets, and points of interest. Unlike route knowledge, which gives sequential turn-by-turn directions, survey knowledge allows a person to understand where things are relative to each other and to plan alternative routes. For people with visual impairments, building survey knowledge is particularly challenging since it often relies on visual cues. Navigation apps like BlindSquare and Microsoft Soundscape support survey knowledge by announcing nearby points of interest and using spatial audio, helping users build a richer understanding of their surroundings beyond just the path they are following.
