Control Surface
Also known as: Hardware Controller, Mixing Console Controller
A control surface is a hardware device with physical knobs, sliders, and buttons that maps to the controls of a software application, most commonly a digital audio workstation (DAW). For people with visual impairments, control surfaces provide essential tactile access to functions that are otherwise presented only through visual interfaces. In audio production, a control surface allows a blind user to feel the positions of multiple channel faders simultaneously, providing spatial awareness of a mix that would be extremely difficult to obtain through screen reader announcements alone. While control surfaces significantly improve accessibility and efficiency, professional-grade devices can cost thousands of dollars, creating a financial barrier to accessible audio production.
