Accessibility Script
Also known as: Accessibility Plugin, Screen Reader Script
An accessibility script is a piece of code, often developed by the user community rather than the software vendor, that adds or improves screen reader support and keyboard accessibility in an application that is otherwise inaccessible or difficult to use with assistive technology. In audio production, notable examples include OSARA for REAPER and Flo Tools for Pro Tools, which expose interface elements to screen readers, add keyboard shortcuts, and provide spoken feedback about application state. Accessibility scripts highlight both the ingenuity of disabled communities in creating their own access solutions and a failure of software developers to build accessibility into their products. These scripts are fragile — software updates can break them — and their maintenance depends on voluntary, often unpaid community labor.
