Flat Affect

Also known as: Blunted Affect, Reduced Expressiveness

Flat affect refers to a significant reduction in the outward expression of emotions, where a person shows little or no visible emotional response through facial expressions, voice tone, or body language. In the context of accessibility and neurodiversity, flat affect is commonly associated with autism spectrum disorder, though it also occurs in other conditions such as schizophrenia and depression. Importantly, flat affect does not mean the person is not experiencing emotions — it means their emotional expression may not match neurotypical expectations. This distinction is critical for the design of AI and communication technologies: emotion recognition systems trained on neurotypical expression data may misinterpret flat affect as disengagement, hostility, or absence of emotion, leading to inaccurate and potentially harmful feedback for neurodivergent users.
