Late Deafened
Also known as: Adventitiously Deaf, Acquired Deafness
Late deafened refers to individuals who became deaf after developing spoken language, typically in adolescence or adulthood. Unlike people who are born deaf or become deaf in early childhood, late-deafened individuals often grew up in hearing culture with spoken language as their primary means of communication. This distinction is important for accessibility because late-deafened people may have different technology needs and preferences than those who grew up using sign language — they may prefer captions and text-based communication over sign language, or they may be in the process of learning sign language as a new skill. Within the broader Deaf community, late-deafened individuals represent a distinct sub-community with unique experiences navigating the transition between hearing and deaf identities.
