Culturally Responsive Design
Also known as: Culturally Sensitive Design, Culture-Centered Design
Culturally responsive design is an approach to creating products, services, and research methods that respects and incorporates the cultural values, practices, and communication norms of the communities they are intended to serve. In accessibility, this is particularly relevant for communities like the Deaf community, where deafness is understood as a cultural and linguistic identity rather than a medical condition. Culturally responsive design goes beyond functional accessibility to consider how cultural context shapes the way people interact with technology — for example, recognizing that a questionnaire designed for ASL signers must account for visual language norms, signer representation, and community-specific identity terms rather than simply translating written English into sign language. This approach requires meaningful involvement of community members throughout the design process.
