Accessible Digital Musical Instrument
Also known as: ADMI
An Accessible Digital Musical Instrument (ADMI) is a digital musical instrument that has been designed or adapted to be usable by people with disabilities. ADMIs typically use motion capture, gesture recognition, or other sensor technologies to map physical movements to sound, freeing music-making from the dexterity, strength, and coordination demands of traditional acoustic instruments. Unlike therapeutic music tools, ADMIs emphasize creative expression, improvisation, empowerment, and flow. Key design principles include customizable movement-to-sound mappings that can be adapted to individual abilities, familiar sound metaphors for immediate engagement, and accommodation of diverse ranges of motion.
