Visual Interpreter
Also known as: Visual Interpreter Service, Visual Description Service, VIDS, Remote Sighted Assistance
A visual interpreter or description service (VIDS) is a technology or human-powered service that provides people who are blind or have low vision with descriptions of their visual surroundings, typically by receiving camera feeds from the user's smartphone or smart glasses. Human-powered VIDS (H-VIDS) like Aira and Be My Eyes connect users with trained agents or volunteers who describe what the camera shows. AI-powered VIDS (AI-VIDS) like Seeing AI use computer vision to automatically identify and describe visual content. These services enable everyday tasks such as reading mail, shopping, navigating, and identifying objects, but raise important privacy concerns as users share visual data that may contain sensitive personal information.
