Bespoke Assistive Technology

Also known as: Bespoke AT, Custom Assistive Technology

Assistive technology that is designed and built from scratch to meet the unique requirements of a specific individual, as opposed to adapting or modifying existing products. Bespoke AT is distinguished from DIY assistive technology by the involvement of professional designers or engineers who collaborate intensively with the end user to create entirely novel forms of AT. This approach is particularly valuable for people whose disabilities or circumstances fall outside common impairment categories, such as those with multiple intersecting disabilities, where off-the-shelf solutions are inadequate.
