Sign Language Interpreting

Also known as: Sign Language Interpretation, ASL Interpreting

The professional practice of translating bidirectionally between a signed language (such as American Sign Language) and a spoken language (such as English) to facilitate communication between Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals and hearing people. Sign language interpreters are trained professionals who convey not only the words but also the tone, intent, and cultural nuances of communication. Interpreting can be provided on-site or remotely via Video Remote Interpreting (VRI). Access to qualified interpreters is a key accommodation under disability rights laws, and the availability and quality of interpreting services significantly affects Deaf people's participation in education, employment, healthcare, and social life.
