Emergency Evacuation Accessibility

Also known as: Accessible Emergency Egress, Inclusive Emergency Evacuation

The design of emergency evacuation procedures, systems, and infrastructure that enable people with disabilities to independently and safely exit buildings during emergencies. Traditional evacuation systems rely on visual and auditory alarms, posted signage, and physical routes that may not accommodate wheelchair users, people who are blind, or those with cognitive impairments. Accessible emergency evacuation requires personalized routing, multimodal alerts, and consideration of individual mobility characteristics to ensure equitable safety outcomes.
