Code Literacy

Also known as: Coding Literacy, Programming Literacy

The ability to read, write, and understand computer code, increasingly recognized as a fundamental skill for education and employment in the digital economy. In accessibility contexts, code literacy education faces significant barriers for people who are blind or have low vision because most coding tools, curricula, and environments are designed for visual interaction — relying on syntax highlighting, visual code structure, graphical debugging tools, and diagram-based learning materials. Accessible coding education requires screen-reader-compatible development environments, tactile and auditory learning materials, and curricula designed around non-visual interaction patterns rather than adaptations of visual approaches.
