Tactile Manipulatives
Also known as: Tactile Learning Objects, Tactile Teaching Aids
Physical objects designed to be explored through touch for educational purposes, particularly valuable for students who are blind or have low vision. In STEM accessibility, tactile manipulatives include embossed diagrams, 3D-printed models, textured game pieces, and Braille-labeled objects used to teach concepts that are typically conveyed visually — such as mathematical graphs, code structure, page layouts, or scientific diagrams. Research shows that tactile manipulatives support the construction of mental models and increase engagement, though students unfamiliar with tactile graphics may need explicit instruction in how to interpret them before they become effective learning tools.
