Immersive Video

Also known as: Immersive Media, VR Video

Video content viewed through head-mounted displays or surrounding screens that creates a sense of being present within the recorded environment. Immersive video includes 360-degree video captured with omnidirectional cameras and computer-generated virtual reality content. In accessibility, immersive video offers opportunities for safe, low-risk training of everyday living skills for people with intellectual and cognitive disabilities, allowing them to practice navigating novel environments, learning tasks, and building confidence before encountering real-world situations. Key design considerations for accessible immersive video include scaffolding the introduction to the technology, embedding guidance within the video rather than providing external instructions, including a visible facilitator for social comfort, and maintaining steady camera movement to prevent disorientation.
