Signer Box
Also known as: Signing Space, Sign Space
The three-dimensional space in front of a sign language user within which signs are produced, typically extending from the waist to just above the head and about an arm's width to either side. The signer box is a critical concept in sign language video production, video conferencing, and assistive technology design because the camera frame, display area, or recording setup must fully capture this space for signs to be comprehensible. If any part of the signer box is cut off, viewers may miss important linguistic information including directional verbs, spatial referencing, and classifier constructions.
