Exif

Also known as: Exchangeable Image File Format, EXIF

A standard metadata format embedded within image files (JPEG, TIFF, and others) that stores information about how an image was created, including camera model, date, GPS coordinates, and orientation. Exif data travels with the image file through most sharing and editing workflows. For accessibility, Exif fields can potentially carry alternative text, structural descriptions, or other semantic metadata that would otherwise be lost when content is converted to an image format. Some social media platforms strip Exif data for privacy reasons, which can limit its use as an accessibility metadata carrier. The format is maintained by the Japan Electronic Industries Development Association (JEIDA).
