Pictograph
Also known as: Pictogram, Picture Symbol, Graphic Symbol
A simplified visual symbol or image that represents a word, concept, or action, used as an alternative or supplement to written text. Pictograph systems such as Sclera, Beta, and Widgit are widely used in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to support people with intellectual disabilities, language disorders, or limited literacy in understanding and producing messages. In digital accessibility, text-to-pictograph translation uses natural language processing to automatically convert written text into sequences of pictographs, making digital content more comprehensible for people who struggle with conventional text.
