Content Adaptation
Also known as: Content Transformation, Web Adaptation
The process of modifying web content to make it more accessible or usable in different contexts, including for users with disabilities, users of assistive technologies, or users on constrained devices like mobile phones. Content adaptation encompasses techniques such as transcoding, layout linearization, content prioritization, and personalized reformatting. Effective content adaptation considers not just the structural transformation of content but also users' existing browsing habits and mental models, as research shows that purely structural changes can introduce new usability problems if they do not align with how users expect to interact with content.
