Virtual Cursor
Also known as: Browse Mode Cursor, Virtual PC Cursor
A navigation mechanism used by screen readers that creates a linearized, text-based representation of a web page through which users can move sequentially. Unlike a visual cursor that points to a location on screen, the virtual cursor moves through the page's content structure — headings, links, form fields, and text — allowing keyboard-based navigation without a mouse. Screen reader users must maintain a mental model of their virtual cursor position relative to page elements, which contributes significantly to the cognitive load of non-visual web browsing. The virtual cursor is distinct from the system focus cursor; screen readers typically offer both browse mode (virtual cursor) and focus mode (direct keyboard interaction with form controls).
